Dining Out- Week of November 13th, 2005

Papa Saverio's Pizzeria
New Berlin

No pictures- didn’t have camera

Cheese and Sausage Pizza

Sighting this slice caught me off guard. I’ve never seen such a thick thin crust pizza. Yes, the crust is thin but topped with a visually impressive topography of Mozzarella. And it is this cheese that makes the meal. Greasy and salty in hindsight I didn’t even notice the sauce taste. However the crust was noticed and appraised with a crackery bottom and thick edges that could have been crispier.

Marsibiglio's Pizza, Pasta, & Subs
Hartland

No pictures- camera battery dead

Gnocci
Hand-made pasta dumplings with secret recipe meat sauce

I always view gnocci as a good gauge of pasta making and Italian cooking. These had just the right amount of density and resiliency. Dices of tomato and fragment of herbs were swimming in a largely mild tasting chunky sauce.

Big Guy’s Grille
Waukesha

Hamburger
½ lb fresh Black Angus burger cooked to medium on a toasted bun; toppings bar available

I really wanted to like this so was anticipating a great burger but it lacked the pronounced flavor and juiciness to make it anything but average. Better than fast food at least.

Décor and Service: Counter service by some nice guys… who were kinda big. Countryish décor remains from when this was the Bon Appetit Sandwich Shop.

Thai Shrimp
Seared shrimp with baby corn, wild mushrooms and basmati rice covered in a green curry and coconut milk sauce

The excellent curry and coconut milk combo came across as a cream sauce whose even light sweetness really united all the other parts while the mushrooms added some conspicuous earthiness.

Seared Virginia Black Bass
Topped with olive tapenade and served with stewed lentils, French beans and fried capers

That thin golden crust wrapped a wonderfully flavorful, flaky and moist piece of fish. Bites with the tapenade countered with saltiness

Seared Scallops
With lemoncello butter sauce, lavender infused rice and sautéed asparagus

Scallops as they should be- plump and firm.

Door County Cherry Chart
Cherry tart in brown butter batter with fruit compote, crème anglaise and vanilla ice cream

The only dish to falter a bit it impressed more as doughy with little cherry filling. This soft and tasty dough would have been better served used in another manner.

Décor: One room is simple yet elegant. The other eating area is a ‘stage’ off the bar area with two banks of windows.
Service: He seemed a bit unsure.
