Dining Out- Week of July 25th, 2005

Lumber Inn
Delafield

Navy Bean Soup

They do make their own soup and this one was quite satisfactory and had a slight smoky taste.

Chicken Salad Stuffed Avocado with Cottage Cheese & Fresh Fruit

Not something I’d typically order made this daily special a nice departure. Creamy chicken salad with apparent seasonings nestled nicely in a creamy yet firm avocado.

Décor: Loved it. Homey and they have a counter.
Service: Homey and anticipatory.

Pinto's Mexican Grill
Brookfield

Chicken Taco
Chicken marinated for hours in southwestern spices, lettuce, pico de gallo, cheese and sour cream

This was all about the juicy chicken seasoned to add tons of flavors. Heck, next time just give me a bowl of this poultry.

XempoS
Tortilla wrapped cheesecake dusted in cinnamon and topped with raspberries

Just as creamy and decadent as you can imagine.

Décor, Service and Comparison: With one location it is not a chain but a near clone in concept and menu to the franchised Chipotle, Qdoba, Baja Fresh, Wahoo’s and Moe’s. Order at the counter, made to order and brought to your table. Based on the above food and sampling the marinated Steak Taco and a Pulled Pork Tostado it is a step above.

Passport Point
Waukesha

Tuna Melt
Tuna salad and tomato slices on toasted English muffins topped with cheddar and served with pasta salad and fresh fruit

Scouting their lunch menu on-line I was geared up for country fried steak or chicken pot pie. So to find these were taken off the menu only leaving sandwiches made this boring preparation that much more of a disappointment. The pasta side was actually more impressive with a respectable assembly of cold bow ties, crunchy carrot/squash/celery/olives, savory olive oil and visible herbs.

Carrot Cake

Without the frosting it would not have had much taste. And I think that whipped cream next to it is Cool Whip.

Décor: A large sparse space made interesting with an alfresco entry way, wall murals and scattering of knick knacks of food orientation.
Service: Very upbeat.

The Flying Hicca
Milwaukee- 50th & Vliet

The French Farmhouse
Smoked chicken, herb aioli, mixed green, marinated tomato and Morbier. Served with Terra vegetable chips.

The creamy, semi-soft, pungent cheese is meant to be the star of this sandwich and the other ingredients fulfilled their supporting roles by contributing but not overwhelming each other. An enjoyable yet not memorable sandwich. Loved the chips.

Décor: With light streaming in the front windows the gallery atmosphere is a nice place to relax.
Service: Maybe it was because it is a one women show that she seemed short with me.

I am bummed to find out that your experience at Passport Point in Waukesha wasn't that great. I am moving to the Shaw in 1 week so I was hoping to have a great place to eat at downtown. Hopefully the dinners are better than your lunch.
