Dining Out- August 17th, 2005

Early morning in Watertown and the door is constantly slamming at Watertown Homestyle Bakery for a stream of donut purchases. In contrast I’m studying the pastry case and go for a Polar Bear- chocolate cake covered in 1 ½” of buttercream all sealed in chocolate. The healthy selection.

Corn beef hash, peppers, onions, Swiss, hash browns and scrambled egg

Notable for the grill singes on both the corn beef hash and hash browns plus spots of color from the peppers. Alas, the meal conclusion was met with disappointment to find a half order brought it from $5 to $4. Yippee.


Décor: The original 1906 ceiling has just been restored.
Service: She was really bustling.

Bummer, they didn’t have any pie slices at Green Thumb Farms in rural Prairie du Sac so I settled for a Chocolate Chip Cookie.



If the billboards and tourist literature don’t clue you in the sign on Baraboo Candy Co. reminds you of the product they push. A Cow Pie is essentially a turtle on steroids.



Jen's Alpine Cafe touts there Homemade Granola and I can vouch they have every right to. A trip to Baraboo could be worth it just for this.



On Baraboo’s town square Corner on Wisconsin has an old fashioned soda fountain- the ideal spot for watching the mixing of syrup and phosphate for an Old Fashioned Soda.



A simple roadside sign outside Poynette redirected my route to the unpolished Lapacek's Orchard and a spectacularly good Caramel Apple from the first batch of the season. A nice conversation with the very nice lady generated a tip about a farm that has a bakery…..



Wildberry Farm is very polished with corn mazes, hay rides, produce, large gift store, ice cream and a bakery that provided this Apple Turnover.

How cool is getting something served on a window tray by a carhop? Good sandwich that benefited from the inclusion of chunks of veggies.



Back in Watertown the Hamburger and Deep Fried Hot Dog at Schuett’s Drive In were forgettable. What was memorable, sadly, was the observation of the lack of sanitation in watching these be prepared.


Does the apple cancel out the caramel???
