Dining Out- Weekend of December 17th, 2005

The first stop in Fitchburg was for Mexican bakery at La Concha with this deceivingly large pastry which was in reality light and airy because of multiple flaky layers that centered a lemony treat.

At The Rolling Pin Bake Shop the slant seemed to be Eastern Europe so the choice was a Russian Tea Cake.

Chile Poached Eggs
With prosciutto, manchego and French rosemary bread

The eggs, which went nice and runny when cut, carried a just perceptible spice from the chile while the Spanish cheese accented with mellow richness.

Breakfast Sandwich
Fried egg, cheddar-spiked boursin, apple wood smoked bacon, tomato and green onion on toasted ciabatta

This assembly had a lot going on and the boursin became the most welcome feature since its smooth texture worked so well in picking up the tastes of the cheddar and green onion.

Pumpkin Pancakes
With spiced mascarpone

What you’d expect and like ones I’ve made at home.

Décor and Service: Excellent type of place to find with a steady buzz from patrons, an open kitchen, counter ordering, bustling servers and a colorful atmosphere.

3 ½ out of 5 stars

This pic shows the cross sections of a trio of stuffed cookies at U-Bake: Macaroon Fudge (coconut filling), Fruit Filled (apple) and Peanut Butter (chocolate with PB filling). Yum!

Farmer John’s Provolone
Provolone, green apples, Renaissance Farm’s sweet basil pesto mayo and spinach on baguette

My concerns were proved that the delicate taste of these fillings, with no meat, would be overwhelmed by the hearty bread. Peeks of the tart apples, bitter spinach, bright/pungent basil and smoky cheese tried to shine through so I ate the second half of it without the bread.

Artesian Farm Trout Salad

Thick, but mostly bland.

Décor and Service: Another counter service café housed in a colorful airy space.

3 out of 5 stars
